Buddle Findlay is pleased to be supporting New Zealand Steel on the procurement and construction aspects of its c. NZ$300m electric arc furnace plant project at New Zealand Steel's Glenbrook steel mill - including New Zealand Steel's design and supply arrangements with Danieli for the electric arc furnace and its enabling and ancillary works contracts. This project is New Zealand’s largest single emissions reduction project and will, when complete, reduce New Zealand Steel's carbon footprint at its Glenbrook steel mill by up to a megaton per annum - equivalent to 1% of New Zealand's total annual emissions. The Buddle Findlay team is led by property and construction senior associate Ed McGimpsey, with support from partner Tom Bennett and solicitor Jenna Tredwell.
Buddle Findlay also advised New Zealand Steel on its power purchase arrangements with Contact Energy in relation to this project – securing a reliable supply of firmed renewable energy for the electric arc furnace once installed and providing important production flexibility to enable New Zealand Steel to scale down production at times of peak demand and supply shortages. The Buddle Findlay team for this part of the transaction was led by consultant, Peter Owles.
