The Fast-track Approvals regime, starting today, aims to expedite the approval process for infrastructure projects in New Zealand, addressing economic growth and infrastructure deficits. The Fast-track Approvals Act, which was enacted in December 2024, includes a list of 149 significant projects and allows other projects to apply for fast-track consideration through an expert panel process.
Retired Environment Court Judge Jane Borthwick has been appointed as panel convener, with Helen Atkins and Jennifer Caldwell (Buddle Findlay national chair and partner) as associate panel conveners, all bringing significant experience in environmental and resource management. Regional Development Minister Shane Jones says, “Ms Atkins and Ms Caldwell have both had oversight and leadership on a mixed range of complex projects”.
