Yesterday the Government formally announced that Cabinet has approved policy provisions for drafting a National Environmental Standard for Marine Aquaculture (NES).
The NES is intended to reduce the complexity involved with re-consenting existing marine farms by creating a consistent set of rules for councils and industry to operate under across the country. The rules are to be in line with best environmental practice, and are expected to encourage investment, sustainability, innovation and growth. The NES is likely to be Gazetted in early 2020.
